What Is Trauma and How to Cope with Its Symptoms

Trauma, or psychological trauma, occurs when we experience a terrible event that is highly stressful and finds it challenging to move on. Examples include being in an accident, a natural disaster, or a war.

Trauma can cause a series of emotional feelings, such as anger, fear, sadness, shame, etc., leading to physical symptoms, including headaches, fatigue, and sweating. Some people’s symptoms resolve after a few weeks, while others’ effects last longer. If the symptoms persist or worsen, trauma can develop into a mental health disorder called post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Symptoms of PTSD include severe anxiety, flashbacks, and persistent memories of the event, which are distressing and interfere with a person’s daily life and relationships.

Fortunately, with proper treatment, people can find constructive ways to manage their emotional and physical symptoms and improve their quality of life.

Potential causes of trauma

Studies estimate that 60–75% of Americans experience a traumatic event at some point in their lives, as listed below:

  • Bullying
  • Harassment
  • Childbirth
  • Life-threatening illnesses
  • Sudden loss of a loved one
  • Being attacked
  • Being kidnapped
  • Natural disasters
  • War

Self-care for trauma

Self-care practices can help individuals cope with the symptoms of trauma, including:

Get more exercise

Aerobic exercise may help mitigate the body’s fight-or-flight response. At least 30 minutes of exercise a day is recommended.

Practice mindfulness

Mindfulness-based exercises can ground people in the present, keeping them away from reliving the traumatic event.

Find support

Connecting with friends and family is important, this can help to prevent trauma from becoming PTSD. However, there’s no need to talk about the trauma with them if you find it too difficult. Simply engaging with your loved ones can improve mood and well-being.

Adopt a balanced lifestyle

Sleep, diet, and relaxation all play a role in mental health. Try to sleep for 7-9 hours a night, eat a balanced diet, and relieve stress with mindful or enjoyable activities.

Can I benefit from running the trauma frequency if I only have the generator X?

    1. Hi Arice. If you load programs in your GenX in advance, you can use GenX standalone. Otherwise, you need to connect your GenX with Scalar, using Rife Scalar mode to get benefits from it.
