Yes, you have to use the link cable and cannot just plug it into the ground. I would advise that you place the cable into a plastic conduit and run it in the air as you will get better performance than having it near the ground.
Do I have to work with the link cable between the 2 devices on vanilla? (plug the 2 devices in the soil ?)
